10-Minute Decision Checklist
A practical checklist for quick decisions on buying, rearing, feeding, health and marketing
1) Why is this chapter important?
Many livestock farmers suffer losses not because of lack of knowledge, but because of rushed decisions. Buying an animal, changing feed, increasing concentrate, starting treatment or committing to customers тАФ all of these benefit from a simple 10-minute pause and a good checklist.
2) Before buying an animal
- Will this animal suit my local climate?
- Do I have enough feed and water for it?
- Am I making an emotional decision, or an economic one?
- Have I checked health, udder, gait, temperament and history?
3) Before changing feed
- Is the new feed safe and practically available?
- Will the transition be gradual?
- Have I considered water and mineral balance too?
4) Before treatment or health action
- Have I understood the symptom correctly?
- Have I consulted a veterinarian?
- Is this an emergency or a routine management issue?
- Do feeding and housing also need correction along with medicine?
5) Before making a marketing promise
- Am I promising quantity or quality?
- Can I supply regularly?
- Does the price justify my cost and effort?
- Is communication with the customer clear?
6) Golden rule for small farmers
Do not take a decision that you cannot sustain for the next 30 days. Small but stable progress is better than a big but unstable plan.
7) Conclusion
A good 10-minute checklist can save a farmer from months of avoidable loss. The quality of a decision matters more than the speed of a decision.
This chapter is useful to keep as a printable or mobile decision checklist.
